A Black Country club will tonight (Wednesday 29th August) offer people of all ages the chance to see how to play a game which has brought even more gold to the UK.

At the World Mind Sports Games in Lille, France, on Wednesday 22nd August England’s women bridge players beat Russia 209-140 to take gold and retain a title they won four years ago in Beijing, China.

Now an open evening and open day to see how the game is played – and a chance to learn how to play from scratch is being offered by Wolverhampton Bridge Club.

The open evening is at its HQ at Shaw Park Business Park, off Shaw Road, Wolverhampton, tonight (Wednesday, 29th August, 7.30pm-10pm) and the open day on Saturday, 8th September (11am- 1pm).

Club chairman Ron Stevenson said: “The women’s success in France follows the huge interest in all sorts of sports and games this Summer, with the European football championships and the Olympics and Paralympics. The women also took gold at the European Bridge Team Championships in June.

“However, as in all kinds of competition, building up one of the strongest teams in the world depends on having a thriving base with new players coming through the ranks all the time.

“We are a very successful club and constantly encourage people to take up a game which stimulates thought, memory and card-playing skill.

“Anyone can play at any age and we are encouraging the younger players but it is particularly helpful for those of a more senior age who can play the game long into later life and can contribute greatly to their social life.

“We are holding the open evening and open day so that people are free to come along, with no strings attached, and see what the game is all about. In addition we will be starting beginners lessons from Thursday 13th September.”

For information about the open day people should telephone Ron on 07769 602489 or 01902 751337 or email ron.is@blueyonder.co.uk

Wolverhampton Bridge Club, founded on 3rd December, 1948, was based on Tettenhall Road for most of its existence but now operates from Shaw Park, Business Park, off Shaw Road, Wolverhampton.
